Mangalore, April 20, 2012 : Citizen’s Forum for Mangalore Development wrote a letter to the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, urging the district administration to restore the disturbed ecosystem of River Phalguni and demanding that the Mangalore Special Economic Zone Limited (MSEZL) must immediately stop dumping mud into the river at Kuloor.
The forum alleged that MSEZL had been dumping mud into River Phalguni along the KIOCL to Jokatte railway gate road for the past two months during its road-widening activities.
The forum’s letter pointed out that the people of Athrebail and Melakoppal, located on the banks of the river, are afraid that these activities would cause artificial flooding during the monsoons. They have already protested against the company’s activities and have demanded that the dumping should instantly stop. According to a resident of Athrebail, they had visited the site of work and forced MSEZL workers to stop the work.
The forum urged the DC to intervene as he is the chairperson of the District Coastal Zone Management Authority.
