Mangalore, April 8, 2013: A joyful swim with classmates turned tragic for Akash Kadur(17) of Chikmagalur who met a watery grave at Panambur beach on April 7, Sunday evening.
A group of about 35 students from Navodaya Vidyalaya had arrived in Mangalore for AEEE exams and had been to the Panambur beach to make merry in the evening.
While enjoying the swim, Akash was washed away by a huge tidal wave. Though the Beach Guards at Panambur plunged into action and took Akash out of the water, he died while being rushed to the hospital, said Yatish Baikampady, CEO of Panambur Beach Tourism Development Project.
Yatish Baikampady said this was the first time that the Panambur Beach Life Guards could not save the life of a drowning person since 2009. So far it has rescued several persons, Yatish said.
