Mangalore, September 28: Viani Antonio D’Cunha, twice international master norm holder chess player of DK, has won the bronze medal at the prestigious national sub junior chess championship organized by the Delhi Chess Association on behalf of the All India Chess Federation from September 4 – 12, 2010 in Delhi.


VianiViani managed the first three rounds with ease and scored 8.5 points in 11 rounds. His match with Sahaj Grover, the former under-10 world chess champion, was a draw. His victory over Shreeshan of Shimoga; Karthikeyan Murali of TN, the former Asian silver medalist; Siddhant Mohapatra of Orissa; G. Akash; and Chaithanya of TN was very tough. He lost 2 rounds with Shardul, the chess champion of Maharashtra, and Girish of Karnataka.


Viani is now eligible to take part in the sub juniors Olympiad at the Asian and international levels and two exposure trips of norms in 2011. His fide rating, which was previously 2222, has now become 2282.
