Mangalore, March 14, 2013 : Cashew growers who are tempted by the economic benefits of growing rubber, were opting for rubber cultivation at the cost of cashew cultivation, said H Dhanakeerthi Balipa, President of the Moodbidri unit of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha.
Speaking at a cashew mela and a training camp organized at Ullal on March 13, Wednesday by the University of Horticulture Sciences, Bagalkot and Horticulture Research Centre Ullal, he said more and more lands where cashew was being cultivated are presently used for rubber plantations. He said cashew growers were only demanding the right price for their produce and not subsidies.
The programme was earlier inaugurated by S D Sampath Samrajya, Member of the Board of Management of University of Horticulture Science, Bagalkot.
Coming down heavily on the government plans to set up an ultra-mega thermal power plant at Niddodi, he said the government should think in terms of setting up of such plants in those districts which have vast tracts of dry land.
An exhibition of different varieties of cashew seeds, cashew products and organic medicines were on display at the venue.
