Mangalore, April 19, 2012 : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organized a protest in front of the DC’s office on April 19 Thursday against the state government’s anti labour policies.
Delivering the protest address, CPI (M) Secretary B. Madhava said that, although the government appointed a committee to determine if minimum wages of Rs. 10,000 per month ought to be fixed for daily wage labourers two years back, it has not convened any meeting so far. He urged the government to take immediate steps to fix minimum wages of Rs. 10,000 per month for daily wage workers. He also said that contract-based workers fare no better than daily-wage workers because their wages are very low.
CITU members also protested against the Food Security and Standard Act implemented the central government, which penalizes traders for minor offences.
Corporator Jayanthi, Vasanth Achary, B. M. Bhat, Sunil Kumar Bajal, Muneer Katipalla, U. B. Lokayya, Balakrishna Shetty, Ramani, Parvathi Shetty, Sanjeev Bangera, and many others were also present.
