Mangalore, Sep 25, 2012 : C. T. Ravi, minister for higher education, said on Monday that he will discuss with Medical Education Minister S. A. Ramdas the issue of adopting National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to the MBBS course in the next academic year. The Directorate of Medical Education in the State is interested in adopting NEET for MBBS admission instead of Common Entrance Test (CET), he added.

When it was brought to his attention that PUC students, who are studying the state syllabus, would find it difficult to answer the NEET, which is based on CBSE’s Class XII syllabus, he said that he will discuss the issue with Mr. Ramdas and identify a solution for it.

However, he confirmed that engineering students will be admitted through the CET and not NEET during the next academic year, adding that the government will wait for one more year before adopting NEET for admission to engineering courses.

In response to a reporter’s query, the minister said that certain degree colleges under the Muzrai Department have expressed a desire to move to the Department of Collegiate Education. The lecturers are not happy about the fact that they are getting state pay scale, not the University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scale. He said that the Muzrai Department had established these colleges for rural students several years back, but now the strength of students in these colleges has reduced owing to the establishment of other degree colleges in the vicinity. He said that, since the Muzrai Department is finding it very difficult to manage these colleges, he will see if they meet the standards set by the UGC.

The minister interacted with reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on values held in Ramakrishna Ashram for PG students. Ajai Kumar, chairman and managing director of Corporation Bank, distributed scholarships on this occasion.
