Mangalore, Jan 30, 2012: The Brahma Rathotsava, also referred to as Kodial Theru, of Shri Venkataramana Temple at Mangalore in Car Street, will be held at 7:00 p.m. today, which happens to be the fifth day of the six-day Car Festival at the temple.
The fourth day, known as Sanna Theru (small car festival), was celebrated yesterday. The idols of the temple deities were carried in a silver palanquin for the mriga bête, a ritual performed on the night of the fourth day. They were later placed on the Sanna Theru or the small chariot.
The festival will end with a Holi Utsav, also known as Okkul, tomorrow.
Shri Venkataramana Temple, which actually belongs to the Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community, attracts people from various other communities. As a result, thousands of people participate in the festival.
This evening, the idol of Lord Venkataramana will be placed in a golden palanquin and will be taken around the sanctum sanctorum of the temple to the accompaniment of music, chanting of the name of the Lord, and bhajans.
This historic temple, which is nearly 400 years old, provides ample opportunities for devotees to socialize and meet old friends and relatives from all over the world.
