Mangaluru, May 16, 2026: Bishop Emeritus Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza marked the 30th anniversary of his episcopal consecration with a pearl jubilee celebration at St Joseph Church, Jeppu, on Friday, May 15.

Widely known as the “People’s Bishop,” Bishop D’Souza is the second-longest-serving bishop in the history of the Mangalore Diocese. Consecrated in 1996, he served actively for 22 years and played a key role in the establishment of major educational and healthcare institutions, besides overseeing the publication of the first Catholic Bible in Konkani.

The celebrations began with a Thanksgiving Mass led by Bishop D’Souza. Bishop of Mangalore Dr Peter Paul Saldanha concelebrated the Mass and, in his homily, highlighted the jubilarian’s episcopal motto, “With the tender Compassion of Jesus Christ,” praising his compassionate pastoral leadership.

Several clergy members, including vicar general Msgr Maxim L Noronha, chancellor Dr Victor George D’Souza, and other diocesan priests and religious leaders, participated in the ceremony along with religious sisters, family members, and well-wishers.

A felicitation programme was later held at Jeppu Centenary Memorial Hall. Delivering the citation, Fr Rajesh Rosario, rector of St Joseph’s Seminary, lauded Bishop D’Souza’s simplicity, prayerful life, and continued service after retirement.

Addressing the gathering, Bishop D’Souza expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout his ministry. “I have dedicated my life to serving Jesus and His people with sincerity, love, and compassion,” he said.

The event was attended by a large gathering, including MLC Ivan D’Souza, principal government pleader M P Noronha, diocesan PROs Roy Castelino and Dr J B Saldanha, and representatives of various religious congregations.

Fr Rupesh Madtha compered the programme, while Msgr Maxim L Noronha welcomed the gathering and Dr Praveen Joy Saldanha proposed the vote of thanks.
