Bhajrangdal activists attack prayer house at Moodubelle ; 6 injured

Udupi, Mar 9, 2013: A total of six persons sustained injuries, one of them seriously when a group of Bhajrangdal men allegedly attacked a  prayer house  at Moodubelle on the night of March 8, Friday. Over ten persons said to be Bhajrangdal activists have been arrested.

Those injured included Roshan, a member of the Bible Society Bible Society of India, a Christian body that is authorized to translate, produce, distribute and market the Holy Bible.  Roshan’s residence which was also used as a prayer house was attacked on the charges of alleged conversion. Those who sustained injuries are Roshan’s mother  Emilia Lobo, Surya (38) from Karkala, Shantaram, Prem Mendonca (16) and  Savio Johnson, a second year student of engineering. Another person named Ramesh who has sustained serious injuries has been admitted to KMC Hospital.


Those arrested in connection with the attack are Sanjeev Poojary, Ranjith Poojary, Sukesh, Dilip, Jayaprakash, Prakash, Raghavendra Acharya, Ramesh Shetty, Satish, Vishwanath Acharya and Suresh.


IGP (Western Range) Pratap Reddy, who visited the spot, has assured immediate action. He said the Department has taken the matter seriously and that all others involved in the case would be arrested soon.


SP Dr Boralingaiah said an FIR has already been registered. He said  further investigations would reveal the exact details regarding the incident.


According to the victim Roshan,  a group all of a sudden barged into the prayer house when around six to eight people were inside and began assaulting them Roshan who managed to click some photos of the attack in his mobile phone, later informed the Shirva police who rushed to the spot.


Roshan says the prayer house has been functioning since 12 years. While admitting that they had received warnings from Bhajrangdal earlier, he said  the group was at the house for around 45 minutes.

He also recalled an incident eight years ago, when a timely action by the cops had prevented a possible act.
