Beltangady, Oct 22, 2025: The sacred Netravati River, considered one of India’s holiest and recently recognized for having the purest water among Karnataka’s rivers, is once again in the spotlight—this time due to a safety concern.

A crocodile has been spotted along the riverbank, raising alarm among locals and devotees. The reptile was seen resting on the sandy shore near the confluence of the Mrutyunjaya and Netravati rivers, close to a temple in the area. The sighting occurred near the Pajiradka Sadashiveshwara Temple in Kalmadka village, Beltangady taluk—an area considered spiritually significant.

The forest department promptly visited the site and conducted an inspection. Meanwhile, residents captured video footage showing the crocodile moving around at night.

Given that many pilgrims visit the temple and consider bathing in the Netravati an act of religious merit, the unexpected presence of a crocodile has sparked concern and fear. Authorities have now urged both visitors and local residents to remain vigilant. They have also advised against bathing in the river until the crocodile is safely captured.

Reports suggest that crocodile sightings have occurred at various points along both the Netravati and Mrutyunjaya rivers in recent days. Devotees have appealed to the authorities to take swift action, fearing that if the crocodile reaches the temple’s bathing ghats, it could result in a dangerous or tragic incident.
