Mangalore, May 11: Manu Baligar, the director of Kannada and Culture Department, said during the inauguration ceremony of Beary Janapada Mela, a one-day Beary cultural festival and state-level Duff competition organized by the Karnataka Beary Sahithya Academy at Don Bosco Hall, that language can be preserved by popularizing culture and that academies must therefore organize cultural programmes. He inaugurated the event by beating the Duff.

He also said that the government is giving great importance to academies because it understands the need to promote regional languages, adding that the government has sanctioned funds for the organization of cultural programmes to popularize languages. 

Pointing out that each regional language has its own special features and folk elements, he said that folk innovations are capable of attracting non speakers of the language too. He reminded the academies that they bear the responsibility of preserving culture, folk, and tradition of regional languages. 

Registrar of the Beary Sahithya Academy Chandrahas Rai made the welcome speech. Chairman of the Academy M. B. Abdul Rahiman presided. Bannaje Babu Amin, the folk scholar, and N. H. Adam Faizi, the priest of Nandavara Juma Masjid, were the chief guests. Azeez Baikampady, a member of the academy, proposed the vote of thanks. Twenty teams from different parts of Karnataka participated in the Duff competition.
