Bantwal: Hundreds attend last rites of Sowmya

Bantwal, Feb 26, 2013:  Twenty two year old Sowmya who was  allegedly raped and murdered at Kuntalgudde in Baltila village of Kalladka on February 25, Monday was laid to rest in the presence of  inconsolable family members and  hundreds of people on Tuesday.

Police have already arrested one Satish (25) of the same village, who reportedly killed Sowmya after she resisted his advances while she was on way home after alighting from a bus at Daddalkad.

 

 

 

 

 

Senior Congress leader and former union minister B Janardhan Poojari who was present on the occasion handed over a cash of Rs 10,000 to the bereaved family and also promised maximum help. Strongly condemning the brutal act, he said he would talk to the senior police officials over the issue. District  Mahila Congress President Mamatha Gatti and District Congress Chief Ramanatha Rai were also present.

 Sowmya who had done her D.Ed had aspired to get a government job and was on her way to collect her documents, when she was killed.

Satish is said to have accosted her and tried to sexually assault her. When she protested, he reportedly stangled her with the shawl of her churidar and choke her to death. Thereafter, he threw her in a pond in a secluded place about 200 metres from her house and fled. A girl who passed by after about five minutes found a mobile phone set lying on the ground. When she received a call on the set, it happened to be from Sowmya’s aunt. When she did not hear Sowmya’s voice, the aunt got worried and informed her parents.

The parents and relatives went in search of her. Not very far from the spot where the mobile was found, they found Sowmya’s body in the pond. Her shawl and handbag were found on a slope from the road to the spot.

 

 

When the news spread, some youngsters who visited the house were told by her mother that Satish had twice earlier tried to molest her and also that he was pestering her to give her phone number. When the police arrived, Satish stood right there to avoid any suspicion. The youngsters immediately came to spot and pounced on him.

Satish tried to escape, but the police caught hold of him and took him into custody. They have filed a case against him.
