Udupi, Sep 24, 2012: Speaking at the meeting of the district Congress committee, Dr. M. Veerappa Moily, union corporate affairs minister, accused the BJP of playing caste politics.
Giving a list of people who had become chief ministers on merit alone, he said that Nijalingappa and Veerendra Patil, Congress leaders from the Lingayath community; S. M. Krishna; Kengal Hanumanthappa from the Okkaliga community; and Bangarappa and others from the backward classes became chief ministers. However, D. V. Sadananda Gowda of the Okkaliga community was asked to step down and B. S. Yeddyurappa ended up in jail, he said.
He later told reporters that the BJP’s opposition to FDI proves their financial illiteracy. Stating that the reforms were not introduced because of the upcoming elections, he said that the reforms are part of the central government’s policies. The limit on subsidized LPG and introduction of FDI in retail sector are meant to boost the economy of the country, he said.
In response to a reporters’ query, he said that there will be no change in KPCC leadership, adding that the Congress is a secular party and will not choos
e leaders on the basis of caste.
