Mangalore, June 21: “Child labour is widespread because of lack of awareness about constitutional rights and laws,” said Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Dr. K. N. Vijayaprakash in his inaugural speech at a seminar on “Child Labour – A Social Menace” jointly organized by the department of labour and the department of information, Junior Chamber International (JCI) on June 20, Sunday at the community hall of Ganeshpur in Kaikamba.
Urging people to use government schemes and facilities such as free and compulsory education, residential schools, and so on, the commissioner said that an ideal society can be formed only through education and awareness. He voiced his opinion that social movement and awareness creation can eradicate the evil practices of child labour and other atrocities on children. He expressed regret over the fact that while many children enjoy life at school, many more aged below 14 devote their lives for those who disregard the laws and regulations of India.
In his keynote address, Labour Commissioner Satyanarayana recalled the tragic accident at a fireworks manufacturing company, which claimed the lives of 39 innocent children and resulted in the creation of a strong anti child labour law. He expressed his opinion that the major causes of child labour are social and economic problems, which can be easily eradicated through compulsory education.
Shridhar Shetty, the president of JCI Suratkal, presided over the programme. Rohini, the district information officer, delivered the welcome and introductory speech. JC Dattatreya, the president of MRPL Employees’ Union, and Seetharam Rai were also present. JC Prashanth proposed the vote of thanks.
The Karavali Janapada Thanda staged a street play on the occasion.
