Mangalore-bound Air India Express plane overshot the runway at Bajpe Airport in Mangalore at 6.30 am this morning. At least 158 passengers are feared dead.

The Boeing-737 coming from Dubai burst into flames soon after it overshot the runway while landing at the airport, said eye witnesses. The plane, manned by a Russian expatriate pilot reportedly landed 2000 feet from touchdown point.


As many as 25 ambulances and firefighters have reached the spot and rescue efforts are on. Karnataka home minister VS Acharya told a TV channel: "There were 166 passengers on board, including four infants. Eight of them have survived."

 

One of the survivors, Mr. Abdul Sattar said that he heard a blast sound when the flight landed in airport. The aircraft had split into pieces and he had jumped out of the flight and ran for safety.


Rescue operators from the site say the weather is very bad and that is impeding speedy operations.


Aviation experts say that landing an aircraft in the Table Top airport in Mangalore requires special skills. The Boeing 737 is equipped with enough gadgets for a safe landing, so speculation is that human error maybe the cause of the accident.


Experts also argue that if the visibility was poor, the pilot could have taken the aircraft up again and hovered around the airport till the visibility improved. But since the Blackbox hasn’t yet been recovered, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown.


The Bajpe International airport Terminal was inaugurated only 10 days ago.


Sonia Gandhi and Karnataka CM have condoled the death of the passengers. UPA has cancelled its anniversary celebrations.

 

The Prime Minister has also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those killed in the crash and Rs 50,000 for the injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund.

Bajpe, Mangalore, May 22, 7-30 AM : 160 people breathed their last when Air India Express IX 892 crashed at Bajpe Airport in Mangalore on the morning of Saturday.  

 


The Air India Express 812 had left Dubai International Airport several hours before it crashed at Mangalore at 6:30 a.m. 163 passengers and an aircraft crew of 6 was on board the plane

 

 

 

 

 

Owing to poor visibility, the aircraft overshot the runway, burst into flames, and fell into a nearby valley. Only 6 passengers are believed to have survived the crash. 


Locals around the crash area were able to rescue 6 passengers, who were rushed to the hospitals. Fire and rescue, police force and commandoes working hard to rescue any survivors. The rough terrain around the table top airport poses difficulties for the rescue team to approach the crash scene. Bajpe Airport runway is smaller than most of the airports, similar airport is found in Shimla.

Rescue operations commenced immediately in spite of the difficulties posed by rains and uneven terrain. Police, civilians, and firefighters helped shift passengers to nearby hospitals.
