Mangalore, March 21: Aggrieved parties had taken legal action against the assistant commissioner’s (AC) court for refusing to obey the verdict given by the Second Additional Senior Civil Court, according to which the AC court had to raise the compensation given to families of Malavoor whose land was acquired for the development of Mangalore Airport in 1999.
The government has distributed the minimum compensation of Rs. 1,100 per cent for all the people who were displaced by this project. Eight families, however, had refused to accept this rate and had appealed to the court for proper compensation. The civil court ordered the AC court, which bears the responsibility of distribution compensation, to increase the compensation to Rs. 7,240 per cent.
The AC Court, however, ignored this order, forcing the families to appeal to the civil court, which passed an order on Feb 28, instructing officials to seize the AC court if it fails to pay the compensation before March 26.
Five days before the deadline, the eight amins of the civil court arrived at the AC court to execute the order. Assistant Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalkatti requested them to grant the AC court a week’s time to discuss the issue with concerned officials.
Later, Mr. Kavalkatti told reporters that a total of Rs. 40 lakh is now required to pay the compensations because of the civil court’s order raising the compensation rates from Rs. 1,100 to Rs. 7,240. He also said that he would write to the state government regarding the development and urging it to release the required funds.
