It may be recalled here that earlier there were reports that Praveen was likely to be released considering his good conduct. The Prisons Department had also sought the opinion of the Police Department.

Meanwhile family members of the victims had approached the Police Commissioner seeking not to release Praveen as he may pose danger to his relatives again and that he would also endanger the society.

The Vamanjoor serial murder that shook the district took place on February 23, 1994, Praveen, a resident of Periyadka in Uppinangady had been to his maternal aunt Appi Sherigarti’s house  Vamanjoor but had killed  Appi, her son Govinda, daughter Shakuntala and Shakuntala’s daughter  Deepika with a wooden club while they were sleeping and had escaped with their jewellery worth around Rs 80,000.

As the charges against Praveen were proved, he was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.  Once while he was being escorted to court, he had given the cops a slip and was on the run for nearly four years and had stayed in Goa where he had remarried. Later his wife’s brother himself had informed the cops about his presence and he was arrested. Later his death sentence was commuted to life sentence.
