Mangalore, Jan 11, 2012 : Guests, delegates, and participants have already started arriving for the National Youth Festival, the 17th of its kind, scheduled to commence in Mangalore on Jan 12.

Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, the deputy commissioner of DK, welcomed them when they arrived at TMA Pai Convention Hall on Tuesday. The delegates also received their identity cards on that day.

By the evening of Tuesday, 912 young people from 13 states across India had arrived. A team of over 100 young people from Sikkim had arrived on the evening of Monday. Accommodation has been arranged for those who arrived on Tuesday at NIT-K Hostel.

The Rashtriya Yuva Purasakar will be conferred on 28 young people from 19 Indian states during this event. The young achievers who have bagged these awards are Edunuri Shankar, A Venkatalakshmi, K. H. Bhagavan Das Gautham of Andhra Pradesh, Bidyuth Dibya Jyothi of Assam, Banti Solanki of Delhi, Kajal C. Karkera of Goa, Raki Dineshchandra of Gujarath, Seema Rani Subhash of Haryana, Vijayakumar, Raja Abdul Vaheed of Jammu Kashmir, Y. Chinnappa of Karnataka, Babu Rajan of Kerala, Santhosh Thivari of Madhya Pradesh, Amith Ganapath Gorke, Nisha Vithoba Jadav of Maharashtra, Jyotsnamayi of Orissa, Girirajkumar, Ramdayal of Rajasthan, Pradeep Mahara of Uttarkhand, Roopali Biswas, Rishab Jain of West Bengal, Rajendra Singh of Manipura, Lwariniyang of Meghalaya, Joy Deep of Tripura, and Sadish of Pondichery.

The inauguration ceremony will be preceded by a colorful procession in which around 50 folk teams will participate, presenting to the guests the rich cultural heritage of Karnataka. The procession will also include 600 participants bearing the national flag of India.

The inauguration ceremony will be followed by a one-a-and-half hour cultural program, directed and guided by Dr. Mohan Alva of the Alva’s Education Foundation. Speaking to reporters, Dr. Alva said that the program will be based on the theme of “number 17” because this is the 17th edition of the National Youth Festival.

The DK Bus Owners Association said that free transportation has been arranged for the participants of the National Youth Festival.

 

On the downside, the district administration has not declared holidays for colleges in DK, and H. R. Nataraj Urs, the joint director of Collegiate Education, said that participating students will have to take the permission of their respective principals.

Although 90 people from Karnataka are participating in the event, not a single young person is participating from DK. H. Usha of Udupi will participate in the Carnatic classical music category, while 17 young people from Shikaripura, 16 from Bangalore, and 11 from Chamarajanagar will participate in the competitive events. Twenty-seven young people from Mandya will be participating in the non-competitive events.
