Ullal: One of 159 college students tests positive in surprise drug screening

Mangaluru, Jul 29, 2026: As part of its intensified campaign against drug abuse among college students, the Mangaluru City Police on Tuesday conducted a surprise drug screening drive by stopping buses and other vehicles carrying students.

The operation was carried out under the leadership of the Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) of the Mangaluru Central and South Sub-Divisions. Students from colleges coming under the limits of Konaje, Ullal, Kankanady, Pandeshwar and Mangaluru South police stations were screened at Kotekar in Ullal and at the Bunt’s Sangha premises in Konaje.

At Kotekar, 72 students from SDM College, Nitte KS Hegde Medical Academy, St Aloysius College, PA College, Bearys Institute, Tipu Sultan College and Canara College underwent drug tests. Of them, only one student tested positive.

At Konaje, police stopped two buses belonging to PA Engineering College and screened 87 students. All of them tested negative.

The screening was conducted between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm using on-the-spot drug testing kits.

Police Commissioner Sudheer Reddy said the number of positive cases has been declining due to continuous inspections and sustained action against drug abuse. He added that the number of students falling prey to drug addiction is also reducing. However, he stressed that much more needs to be done to make society completely drug-free.

The student who tested positive will face legal action as per the law and will also be provided counselling, the Commissioner said.
