Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Dec 8, 2011: One thousand three hundred families, comprising a total of 6240 people, are in danger of being evicted if the Kudremukh National Park is brought under the ambit of the Tiger Project, the objective of which is to protect and conserve tigers in the region.

Expressing fears regarding the eviction, Nagesh Angisara, one of the representatives of the Kudremukh National Park Area Citizens’ Committee, said that the committee has already submitted a memorandum to Jayanthi Natarajan, the union minister of environment and forests, through the DC, in which the committee also demanded basic facilities such as electric supply and roads for the people of the area.

Mr. Nagesh also predicts that the Maoist movement might come back to life if basic facilities are not provided to this area. He voiced his opinion that Project Tiger will create rift among various tribes too.

Revealing that certain regions of Shimoga and Chikmagalur have basic facilities in spite of the presence of the Tiger Project, he said that he does not understand why facilities cannot be provided to the people of this area.

M. Harish, Shivappa Malekudiya, Sunder Poojary, and Krishna Bhat were also present at the press conference.
