Replying to the question raised by the Corporators Shanker Bhat and Naveen D’Souza, at the MCC general meeting here on Monday, he said that in case of adulterated food, we need to send the samples to the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore and Food and Water Analysis Centre, Bangalore for testing.

The results of the samples tested get delayed. “If we get a lab, then the adulterated food can be tested and action could be initiated against the culprits immediately,” he said. Food testing lab is need of the hour, he added.

He said according to the Karnataka Municipal Councils Act Section 44 (a), artificial ripening  of banana, mango and musumbi using acetylene or carbide gas is a punishable offence and results in the adulteration of the food. As per the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, those who indulge in adulteration of food will get one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000, he added.
