‘Lakshmisha’ kills his mahout

Puttur, Jan3,2013:  The Shiroor Mutt elephant Lakshmisha who  gave tense moments  for the authorities and public on January 1 Tuesday and had cooled down on Wednesday after being injected with tranquilizers, went wild again on the night of January 2, Wednesday and  killed its mahout by lifting him with its trunk and flinging him to a distance.

The mahout Chandra died at the spot due to excessive bleeding. Chandra had gone near the elephant at night with the hope that Lakshmisha who had cooled down, would obey him, but was proved wrong and eventually lost his life.

The incident took place when Lakshmisha was being taken to his camp at Uppinangady. If Chandra was in front of the elephant, another mahout Varadarajan was riding on top of the pachyderm. Varadarajan was however successful in jumping off the elephant which ran upto a distance. He then somehow managed to chain the elephant.

Earlier, in the day, Lakshmisha was injected with tranquilizers by a veterinarian from Trissur and was somehow coaxed to step out of the lorry by ‘Abhimanyu’ an elephant which had arrived from the Dubaare camp. Just when everything had settled down and the authorities had heaved a sigh  a relief, tragedy struck and claimed the life of the innocent mahout.
