Muzafarpur-Yashwantpur Express derailed: Atleast two dead

Chennai, April 10, 2013: Atleast two people  died and several injured when 11 bogies of  Muzafarpur-Yashwantpur Express derailed in Tamil Nadu.

The accident occurred at Chitheri area near Arakonam, around 60 km from here, at about 6 a.m. Wednesday, said a southern railway official.

"As far as the information we have received two persons lost their lives when 11 bogies of Muzafarpur-Yashwantpur Express derailed at Chitheri around 6 a.m. today (Wednesday)," a railway official said. The exact cause of the accident is not known yet.

The official said a rescue team was on its way to the accident spot. The injured had been rushed to the government hospital.

The accident has affected rail traffic on the Arakkonam junction. Several trains coming from Chennai including the Kovai Express, the Duronto Express, the Bangalore Express and the Brindvan Express have been cancelled and many other have been delayed.

Sources in the Railways say normal services are expected to resume by the evening.

In 2011, nine people were killed when two trains collided with each other at the Sitteri station.
