New Delhi, Feb 13:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi today summoned Delhi Police Chief BS Bassi over a break-in and theft at a convent school in south Delhi’s Vasant Vihar and ordered strong action on those involved.

The incident took place at the Holy Child Auxilium School last night and was linked by some to recent attacks on churches in Delhi. PM Modi reportedly told the police chief that a "stern message" should go out against such attacks.

Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s chief minister-designate, also condemned the incident and tweeted that such acts "will not be tolerated."

School officials say the window of the principal’s office was broken and around Rs. 12,000 was stolen from there. A swarm of police officers investigated the premises today; all students were sent home and a notice at the gate says, "No classes will be conducted today."

Principal Lucy John said it was theft. "To us it is not a case of vandalism but theft. No religious item was stolen," she said.

Education Minister Smriti Irani, who studied in this school, visited it this afternoon. She reportedly requested Home Minister Rajnath Singh to look into the incident.

Father Dominic Emmanuel, spokesperson of the Delhi Archdiocese, however, linked the incident to recent attacks on churches. "Certain people came at night, broke the CCTV camera, went into the principal’s room and ransacked it," he said.

After massive protests by Christian groups, the government had tightened security around churches and other religious institutions.
