The order specifies that the SIT will investigate the case registered at Aland Police Station in Kalaburgi on February 21, 2023, along with any new cases that may arise. Previously, the CID was handling the probe.

The SIT has been granted the status of a police station and is required to submit final reports to the relevant courts. The team will function under the supervision of MA Saleem, Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG&IGP), and Director General of Police (DGP), CID (Special Units and Economic Offences).

The case gained renewed attention after Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi accused Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of withholding information necessary for the investigation. Gandhi claimed that the CID had written to the Election Commission 18 times seeking technical details but received no response.

In the 2023 Assembly elections, Congress leader BR Patil defeated BJP’s Subhash Guttedar from Aland by 10,348 votes.
