The protest was held in front of Kille Maidan in Puttur on the evening of July 2, 2025. The group had gathered under the leadership of Ashraf Bau, SDPI president of the Puttur Assembly constituency, to condemn the alleged rape incident involving the son of a BJP leader and municipal council member. The protest also demanded justice for the victim.

According to the police, the group assembled unlawfully and used loudspeakers without authorization. As a result, a case (Crime No. 53/2025) has been registered under Section 189(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — for unlawful assembly with the intention of disturbing public peace — and Section 109 of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963.
