Time to reshape world governance, give global south its voice: PM Modi to Ghanaian parliament

Ghanaian, July 3, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the Ghanaian parliament, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to address the parliament of one of Africa’s growing economies in three decades. In his address he also called the nation a beacon of inspiration for Africa.

“Ghana is a land that radiates democracy and brilliance," PM Modi said. He also said that the world cannot continue to ignore the Global South. “Progress cannot come without giving voice to the Global South," he said.

“Africa has a rightful place at the global high table. Proud that African Union become permanent member of G20 during our presidency," he said.

India and Ghana signed several pacts during PM Modi’s visit spanning sectors like research and development (R&D), medicine and cultural exchange.

Prime Minister Modi also paid respects at the memorial of Kwame Nkrumah and was presented with the Guard Of Honour. He thanked the people of Ghana in his speech and said the people of India thank them for bestowing their highest civilian honour on him.

“Earlier today, I had the honour of paying tribute to our visionary and statesman and the beloved son of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He once said that the forces that unite us are greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart. His words continue to guide our shared journey," he said.

He said India has welcomed everyone who has come the country and said that allowed Indians to integrate so well with Ghanian society, referring to Indian diaspora in Ghana.

“Our relationship knows no bounds. Our friendship is sweeter than your famous than your sugarcoated pineapples," he said while speaking to Ghanian members of the parliament in Accra, who greeted his words with cheers. “India will walk shoulder-to-shoulder with you on this road," he said.
