Mangalore, Aug 27, 2013: The World’s largest moth, the Atlas Moth was spotted in the outskirts of Mangalore at the Nitte University campus by Dr. Arunachalam Kumar. This specimen of the species Attacus atlas, had a wing span of 25 cms, making it one among biggest on record from this part of India.
The Atlas moth is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, and is common across the Malaysia. Atlas moths are considered the largest moths in the world n terms of total wing surface area, reaching upwards of 400 cm (62 sq in). Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, reaching over 25 cm (10 in). Females are appreciably larger and heavier.
Dr. Arunachalam Kumar released the moth after measuring and getting it photographed by his colleague Mr. Savinaya.
