Mangalore, Dec 2, 2011: A workshop titled Evidence-based Medicine organized jointly by the South Asian Cochrane Centre and Fr. Muller Medical College (FMMC) was inaugurated on the premises of FMMC on Dec 2 Friday.

Prof. Prathap Tharayan, the director of South Asian Cochrane Network and Centre in Vellore, spoke on the occasion. He also spoke of the different approaches of medicine and stressed on the importance of research for the development of any scientific field. He also said that drug companies have hijacked research because they are interested only in profit. Drug companies also dominate medical professionals and control to a large extent the type of research that can be done, which is very dangerous, he added.

FMCI Director Fr. Patrick Rodrigues presided over the event and expressed his happiness at being associated with the Cochrane Collaboration since it focuses on providing credible information to doctors and helping them take informed decisions.

Dr. Prabha Adhikari, who inaugurated the workshop, opined in her inaugural address that failure to publish research conducted on patients is criminal. Speaking of her experiences in publishing an article, she said that this taught her of the importance of maintaining records and analysing data. Research is a 24-hour job, she opined.

The audience comprised largely of medical students and professionals. Around 100 delegates participated in the workshop.

Fr. Patrick Rodrigues, the director of FMCI; Fr. Denis D’Sa, the administrator of FMMC; Dr. Jayaprakash Alva, the dean; and Dr. Smitha Bhat were also present.
