Mangalore, Oct 3: An exhibition and sale of handmade products was inaugurated by Deputy Speaker N. Yogesh Bhat at Kanthi Church Hall near Mangaladevi Temple on Oct 3 Monday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Bhat said that the state government has agreed to release Rs. 65 lakh for the construction of a building for self-employed women in Mangalore. Urging women to join self-help groups in large numbers, he said that the public must encourage these women by purchasing their products.
Just before the inauguration, Sarojini Bharadwaj, the chairperson of the Karnataka State Women’s Development Corporation said that the corporation will join NGOs to start a Women’s Employment Guidance Centre for unemployed women and will train them. She said that self-employed women should be motivated by providing them loans at low rates, adding that 15 self-help groups in DK has applied for loans under the corporation’s Jeevan Saathi scheme.
Speaking about the Jeevan Saathi scheme, she said that the corporation will provide loans in the range of Rs. 500 – Rs. 5000 to women street vendors, adding that the government has already earmarked Rs. 2 crore for this scheme. She said that the scheme has already been launched in places such as Gadag, Shimoga, and Mysore, adding that 16 of the applicants are handicapped women and 13 of these applications have already been approved.
Pickles, snacks, papads, hand bags, ornaments, dress materials, cosmetics, and other products are available at this expo.
