Mangalore, Nov 10, 2012 : A woman was attacked allegedly by members of a fundamentalist group for travelling with a man belonging to another community.
The victim Deeba Algani (23) complained that a group of 12 people stopped the car she was travelling by near Bajpe and stole Rs. 3 lakh and a cell phone. Now in hospital, Deeba told reporters that the mob beat her up.
Her mother Zubeida is an independent member of the Padubidri Gram Panchayat.
Further speaking about her experience, Deeba said that the mob stopped the car, pulled them out, and assaulted them. They demanded to know why she was travelling with a Hindu. She said that she heard the miscreants talking in Beary and referring to the Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD). She is confident that she can identify the miscreants.
Her mother Zubeida said that she had taken a house on lease in Bajpe from a realtor called Dharma a week back. She had given her daughter Rs. 3 lakh to pay Dharma, adding that Deeba had another Rs. 7000 in her purse.
Stating that she had come to Mangalore with her daughter to purchase home appliances for their new house, she had asked Deeba to come in Dharma’s car because their own car was full of appliances. Although both cars started at the same time, Zubeida’s car went ahead of Dharma’s car.
Zubeida is a BJP-backed member of the GP.
The Bajpe police have registered a case. Meanwhile, the Popular Front of India (PFI) said that it has nothing to do with the incident. District Secretary Abdul Majeed said that he will investigate the case.
