Udupi, Jan4,2013 : Tusker ‘Lakshmisha’ has been in the news since the past couple of days ever since he went wild while on a travel from Puttur and Sullia on January 2 Tuesday and eventually killed his mahout the next day. There is curiosity all over as to who is this Lakshmisha.
Here are the details. ‘Lakshmisha’ was born on October 10, 1989 at Sakrebail in Shimoga, where there is an elephant safari. His first name was Parashurama.
When Sri Lakshmivara Theertha Swamiji of Sri Shiroor Mutt of Udupi was during his second Paryaya, the then chief minister and several senior politicians of the district donated this elephant to the Mutt on April 1, 1994. Later, the Shiroor seer named him as ‘Lakshmisha.’
People of Udupi still remember the horrific incident of 2004, when this very same ‘Lakshmisha’ went amock. On that fateful day, Lakshmisha was angry over his mahout for some reason. He virtually went on rampage by pounding on the cars parked at Chittaranjan Circle and then had been to the mahout’ s room behind the Rajangana in search of him.
There were people who saw ‘Lakshmisha’ ransack the room. The mahout was however saved as he was in the first floor. Later, Lakshmisha had tried to barge into Anantheshwara Temple and then into the fields adjacent to the Vidyodaya School. It had even rushed towards Tenkapete, Poorna Prajna and City Bus stand, creating panic and forcing people run helter-skelter.
The elephant cooled down the next day after tranquilisers were shot at him.
Within a week of this incident, the tusker was sent to Shiroor and then entrusted to the custody of one Karunaker of Uppinangady. Now, he has once again created ruckus at Puttur and this time has claimed a life.
