Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, April 26, 2012: Gulzar Banu, the mayor of Mangalore, chaired the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) meeting held in its council hall on April 26 Thursday. Important issues such as drinking water, drainage, and others were discussed on this occasion.

Speaking on the drainage system, Shankar Bhat, the former mayor of Mangalore, said that the city does not have proper drainage facilities, owing to which the MCC must prioritize the drainage issue.

Reacting to a public statement issued by Vijay Kumar Shetty, the former MLA, in which he accused the MCC of being responsible for the city’s water crisis, Sudhir Shetty, one of the corporators, said that this statement is meaningless.

In response, Harish Kumar, the commissioner of MCC, said that the MCC is involved in laying new water pipes, for which the land acquisition process is still on. He said that the matter will be discussed and the problem solved at the earliest possible.

Mr. Sudhir Shetty also remarked that CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda canceled his Japan trip because of minor earthquakes in Karnataka and the tsunami alert, but Mayor Gulzar Banu went to Dubai in spite of all the problems associated with the post of mayor.

Speaking about water issues, Harinath Bondel of the opposition said that Mangalore had enough water, but officers concerned have done their best to reduce it. Complaining that the Thumbe dam was constructed for MRPL and that soon MSEZ will build a dam, he sarcastically stated that people will have to drink diesel and petrol from MRPL. He also urged the mayor to study the various pros and cons before approving the MSEZ dam. In response, the commissioner said that water has to be supplied to MRPL because they have to complete their assignment.

The mayor brought it to the notice of the meeting that the MCC has still not received the health department’s report of the Bunder area.
