Mangaluru, May 6, 2025: The Mangaluru East Police on Monday, May 5, booked cases of public mischief, damage to property, promoting enmity between groups and abetment to crime against Vishwa Hindu Parishad‘s south Karnataka joint secretary Sharan Pumpwell with regard to his call for Dakshina Kannada bandh on May 1, Thursday midnight.
A statement from the police here said Pumpwell had given the call and made provocative statements in the premises of A.J. Hospital while speaking to the media. Though shops and establishments remained closed on May 2 in Mangaluru, buses were operating.
Following this, Pumpwell’s followers pelted stones on many KSRTC buses and created tense situation. These acts created strife between communities and breached public peace. Consequently, the East police registered a case against Pumpwell under Sections 353 (2), 196 (1) (b), 49 and 324 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, police said.
The bandh call was given to protest the murder of Suhas Shetty at Bajpe on April 1.
