Udupi, Mar 23, 2026: A tyre puncture repair shop was completely destroyed in a fire near the Hejamadi toll plaza on National Highway 66 on Sunday afternoon, March 22, officials said.
The fire is suspected to have been triggered by sparks from a nearby electric transformer, which ignited dry grass in the area. The flames spread rapidly and engulfed the shop owned by Saifulla, a native of Bihar.
“The fire spread quickly, destroying the compressor, generator, tool kits, and tyres stored in the shop,” a local official said.
Local residents and Padubidri police were the first to respond and tried to douse the flames using water. Fire and emergency services personnel from Udupi later arrived at the scene and brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby properties.
The total loss in the incident is estimated at around ₹4–5 lakh.
