Thannirbavi beach cleared of plastics for World Environment Day

Mangaluru, June 3, 2018: A week-long beach cleaning programme initiated by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Govt of India, in collaboration with College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, district administration, and Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management continued on June 2, Saturday at Thannirbavi beach.

A line-up of departments from Environment and Ecology, Department of Fisheries and students of College of Fisheries, Sahyadri Engineering College, Aided Vidhyadayini High School, Surathkal, Koloor High School and Bertrand Russell High School, Bikampady participated actively in the beach cleaning programme.

Nearly a truckload of plastic garbage was picked up from the beach and was disposed of with help from the City Corporation.

Shreelatha U A, academic administrative officer, Sahyadri College, Mangalore addressed the volunteers and explained about the importance of maintaining cleanliness at the beach.

India has been chosen as global host for World Environment Day, 2018. In this regard, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Government of India, has plans to undertake cleaning up of beaches and river stretches in the country under the tagline of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.

On Friday, the volunteers cleaned the 3-km stretch of Panambur beach.  Dr S M Shivaprakash Dean, College of Fisheries, Mangaluru inaugurated and addressed the volunteers and explained about the cleanliness of the beach and the negative impact of plastics on marine life.
