State Fisheries Minister Asnotikar visits old Mangalore port

Mangalore, Oct 17. 2011: Anand Asnotikar, the state fisheries minister, visited the old port of Mangalore today to get an idea of its conditions. He also spent some time listening to the grievances of the port employees.

 

Assuring them that he was aware of their problems, he said that the state government will take all the required steps to address the issues of fishermen and workers at the port.

He also said that Sharad Pawar, the union minister for agriculture, will visit the old port on Nov 2 to lay the cornerstone for the third phase of the dock construction project. 


Interacting with reporters, he said that the government will provide both state and central compensations to the families of dead fishermen. Stating that the government has received several complaints regarding Coast Guard and NMPT apathy to fishermen’s problems, he said that these complaints will be investigated thoroughly. 


Regarding the state government’s reaction to the recent attack on trucks transporting fish in Kerala, he said that he has written to the Kerala secretary of fisheries to take required steps to prevent such assaults.
