Mangalore, March 12, 2013: A portion of the compound wall of the St Antony’s Ashram at Jeppu came crashing down on March 12, Tuesday morning. A pipeline repair work being undertaken by MCC workers close by the compound wall is said to be the reason for the mishap. The work has been suspended following the incident.
MCC workers were pressed into service in the area to repair a ruptured water pipeline and a JCB was removing mud and depositing it near the wall, when the incident took place.
Fr George, Assistant Director of St Antony’s Charity Institution has said that at least Rs 10 lakh might be required to repair the high rise compound wall. The over a century old Ashram has nearly 400 inmates. He also recalls a similar incident that took place two years ago when an MCC work itself had led to the collapse of the wall.
The local corporator Jacintha Alfred who rushed to the spot, said the repair was being done as a water pipe was leaking. She also assured that the MCC would take steps to rebuild the compound wall.
