Mangalore, January 21: The department of mass communication of St. Aloysius College organized a 2-day seminar titled “Media Manthan” in association with Deccan Herald in its Eric Mathaias Hall.
Lokayukta Justice Santhosh Hegde, who inaugurated the seminar, said that 2010 is considered to be the year of scams such as 2G scams, land scams, and others, adding that the media has revealed some of the worst scams in the state. He said that, since the media has been recognized as the “fourth estate” and has become very powerful, political parties always attempt to take advantage of it. Pointing out the fact that politicians have either purchased newspapers or started media houses, he said that the media should not become the instrument of any government.
Admitting that the media has done a great job exposing the shortcoming of various political parties, he said that it cannot be denied that the quality of news is very poor. He urged media persons to fearlessly expose the truth because it is their duty to do so.
Adam Claphan, the former BBC producer, and Prof. Poornanda of Kuvempu University delivered talks on the subject “Media, Politics, and Manipulations.”
Later media, legal, and academic representatives discussed how the media is manipulated by powerful forces and how this affects decision making on the part of citizens.
