Shashi Tharoor declares Kasargod as nation’s 2nd Total Primary Education District

Kasargod, Oct 7, 2013: Education to the girl child will go a long way in the overall development of the society, said Shashi Tharoor, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development.

He was speaking after declaring Kasargod District as the second district in the nation to achieve total Primary Education, at a function held at the Government High School grounds  in the town on October 6, Sunday.

The minister said the feat could be achieved through the Vigyan Jyothi Scheme launched by the Kasargod Zilla Panchayat. Stating that the women’s literary rate which was 8.9 per cent during independence has now increased to 65.5 per cent, he added that India can progress in the true sense when it achieves 100 per cent literacy.

The Union Minister also stressed the need to identify school drop outs and enroll them to schools. Stating that it was a matter of pride that Kasargod  has achieved total primary education, he said the fact is  that the first district that achieved total primary education was Kannanur which is also in Kerala.

P Karunakeran, MP  presided over the function. Legislators K Kunhiraman, E Chandrashekhar, Deputy Commissioner PS Mohammad Sageer,  Literacy Mission Director Dr Geetha Sajeev, ZP president PP Shyamala and several others were present.
