Mangalore, September 21: Krishna Palemar, the district-in-charge minister, said that prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code will be declared in DK from the midnight of September 23 to the midnight of September 26; however, no restrictions will be placed on Jum’ah prayers on Friday.

The district administration has taken this decision on the basis of a suggestion made by the police department to maintain peace and law and order on the day the Allahabad High Court will declare its verdict on the Ayodhya Ram Janma Bhoomi issue. The announcement was made during a peace committee meeting held at the DC’s office. Mr. Palemar urged the citizens to maintain peace irrespective of the nature of the verdict and not to over react to the situation.


Mangalore Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said that the police will do everything in their power to maintain peace. Regarding provocative text messages allegedly being circulated, he said that the police department has the technology to trace these text messages and that the department will detain trouble makers if necessary. He also said that the police department will send text messages urging people to maintain peace and order to all mobile phones in DK and urged people to contact the police station before taking any rumours seriously.


Pro-Hindu outfits such as Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Bajrang Dal, Hindu Yuva Sene, and Hindu Jagaran Vedike organized a press conference in collaboration with the Muslim Central Committee, the Wakf Board, and the Jamat-e-Islami; however, the Shri Rama Sene and the Popular Front of India were absent for these meetings.


In Udupi, leaders of organizations and political parties, religious leaders, and businessmen met at the Udupi Town Police Station on Monday to discuss ways to maintain peace and order in the city after the Allahabad High Court verdict. The people of Udupi have been requested to be peaceful and calm irrespective of the verdict on September 24. The police officials have warned that strict action will be taken against trouble makers. A total of 14 meetings were held in different areas to discuss peace issues.
