Sakar Foundation Spreads its Wings in Coastal Karnataka with ‘Beyond Schools’ Project

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, September 1, 2023: In a quest to revolutionise education and prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow, the US-based non-profit Sakar Foundation has launched an innovative project called ’Beyond Schools’. This project is set to transform the learning experience for students by imparting practical knowledge beyond the confines of the traditional curriculum. The project mainly focuses on hands-on training and essential life skills, igniting curiosity and passion for learning among students at partnering schools in coastal Karnataka.

Based in Simi Valley, California, USA, the Sakar Foundation was founded by Keisha Pai and Keithan Pai, two young Mangalore-origin siblings. Sākār, in Sanskrit, means "turning dreams into reality." The Sakar Foundation aims to restore hope in humanity by fulfilling dreams of goodness and welfare in society across all domains of life. The foundation has already undertaken several projects that touch the lives of disadvantaged schoolchildren in the USA, Uganda and India.

The "Beyond Schools" programme is the brainchild of the founders, Keisha Pai and Keithan Pai, along with the mentorship of Veeda Almeida, Nandakishore NM, B Rashmi Mallya, Ashel Castelino and Jeffry John. The formal education system is centred around academic excellence, with a heavy emphasis on theoretical learning. However, as the world rapidly evolves, there is an increasing demand for individuals who possess practical skills, critical thinking abilities and adaptability to navigate real-world situations. "Beyond Schools" aims to bridge this gap by incorporating a range of practical topics that extend beyond the classroom syllabus.

The Sakar Foundation invites partnerships with schools and other educational settings in Coastal Karnataka for its "Beyond Schools" project. Sakar Foundation provides its facilities and services entirely free of cost to the partnering institutions. Additionally, individuals who are passionate about a skill or topic are welcome to join our team of resource persons. Innovative ideas to take this project forward are also welcome.

Empowering Young Minds:
At the heart of "Beyond Schools" is the vision to empower young minds with the necessary tools for success in both personal and professional spheres. The project offers workshops and training sessions that cover a diverse array of practical subjects, including financial literacy, problem-solving, communication skills, entrepreneurship, and more. These are planned, spanned across our calendar, and delivered in different partnered schools. By equipping students with these vital life skills, "Beyond Schools" seeks to foster confident and well-rounded individuals who are better prepared to face the challenges of the modern world.

Collaboration with Educational Institutions:
"Beyond Schools" collaborates with schools to customise workshops based on the specific needs and interests of their students. By involving teachers and school administrators in the planning process, the project ensures that the content is aligned with the school’s vision and objectives.

The project has garnered immense support from various educational institutions in the region. Sakar Foundation has already extended meaningful support to SVS School, Katapady; Asha Nilaya Special School, Udupi; St. Mary’s PU College, Shirva; St. Lawrence PU College, High School and Primary School at Moodubelle; and Manasa Special School at Pamboor, Shirva. So far, the programmes have included topics on psychoeducation, social skills, CPR and First Aid skills, nutrition and wellness. There are further plans on a range of other topics, with passionate subject experts from each field heading the workshops.

During the COVID-19 crisis, the Sakar Foundation, in association with Invenger Technologies, also sponsored a 24x7 ambulance service with life-saving equipment under the aegis of Mangaluru City Corporation.

Impact and Future Prospects:
Since its inception, "Beyond Schools" has left a lasting impact on students and educators alike. The workshops have received positive feedback, with students expressing newfound enthusiasm for subjects just introduced to them with a new outlook. The project has also received accolades from parents and school authorities, who have witnessed the positive transformation in students’ attitudes towards learning.

As "Beyond Schools" continues to expand its reach, the project’s founders and mentor envision a future where practical education becomes an integral part of the mainstream curriculum, empowering students to unlock their full potential and lead successful and fulfilling lives. With its focus on practical topics and experiential learning, the project is sowing the seeds for a generation of confident and capable individuals ready to tackle the challenges of the dynamic world they will inherit.
