Mangalore, Nov 26, 2012: The Rachana Awards were given away at a special awards ceremony held at Milagres Jubilee Hall on Nov 25, Sunday.
The chief guest of the event was Major General (retired) Jan Cardoza AVSM, chairman of rehabilitation, ministry of social justice and empowerment, Government of India. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore, presided.
Prescilla Cardoza, wife of Jan Cardoza; Roy Castelino, president of Rachana; John Monteiro, secretary; and Marcel Monteiro, convener of Rachana Awards, were the dignitaries on the dais.
Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, along with other dignitaries on the dais, conferred the Rachana Awards on five eminent personalities.
The winners of the Rachana Awards were Prof. Hilda Rayappan, founder of Prajna Counseling Centre (Rachana Outstanding Woman of the Year); Florine Pinto Perne (Rachana Agriculturist of the Year); Walter D’Souza, leading exporter in Mangalore and chairman of the Federation of Indian Export Organization (SR), ministry of commerce, (Rachana Entrepreneur of the Year Award); Dr. Oscar G. Concesso, a Chennai-based architect (Rachana Professional of the Year); and Mark Denis D’Souza of Sharjah (Rachana NRI Entrepreneur of the Year).
Addressing the gathering, Jan Cardoza congratulated the winners and Rachana for recognizing, appreciating, and rewarding achievers.
Delivering the presidential address, the bishop of Mangalore said that he is happy for the five winners of the Rachana Awards. He urged Rachana to guide young people toward entrepreneurship, adding that this will encourage many young people to become entrepreneurs.
In her acceptance address, award winner Hilda Rayappan said that her life has meaning only because of the social service she does.
The other award winners also spoke on the occasion.
A prayer dance by Mandd Sobhann troupe marked the beginning of the award ceremony. Roy Castelino delivered the welcome address while Stany Alvares and Roveena Pereira were the MCs.
Among those present were Ivan D’Souza, Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Lancy Mascarenhas, Austin Peris, Felix Pinto, Marjorie Texeira, and Nyzil Periera.
