Mangalore, May 17, 2012: The Right to Education Vigilance and Monitoring Committee of DK will organize a district-wide jatha called Savithribai Phule Right to Education Awareness jatha from May 23. The purpose is to enhance awareness about Right to Education (RTE) Act among the public.
Speaking about the jatha at a press conference held on May 17, Thursday, Renni D’Souza, the convener of the committee, said that the organizers have named the jatha in honor of Savithribai Phule because of her efforts to make education accessible to marginalized sections of society.
The organizers will educate the public about the provisions of the RTE and how they can take schools and education officers to task for violating RTE norms.
The jatha will start at Mangalore on May 23 and will then go to Bantwal, Belthangady, and Puttur on May 24, 25, and 26, respectively. It will end at Sullia on May 28, he said.
In response to a reporter’s question regarding 25 percent reservation for marginalized sections of society, Lolaksha of AHINDA and member of the RTE committee said that they are still demanding that schools cancel admissions already made. Although schools have closed the admission process, they can still implement the RTE, he said, adding that children of migrant workers and street children must start benefiting from this act from the current academic year.
He also urged elected representatives to ensure that the RTE is properly implemented in their respective constituencies.
