Poovamma wins gold in 400m and Avin bags long jump silver for Mangalore University

Moodbidri, Dec 19, 2011: Poovamma MR nailed the women’s 400-metre gold on the third day of the 72nd all-India inter-varsity athletics championship at the Swarajya Maidan here on Monday.

Poovamma of Mangalore University clocked 54.51 seconds to pocket the only title on the day for Karnataka. Arya C of University of Calicut came second in 55.20 while Anu Mariam Jose of Kannur University finished third in 56.22.

 

 

 

 

 

The State athletes also won three silver medals on Monday. Long jumper Avin Kumar of Mangalore University claimed silver, leaping to a distance of 7.19 metres which was won by B Azharuddin of Bharatidasan University. Azharuddin found a distance of 7.39, a good 30 centimetres from his nearest rival Avin, for the title.

Shahejahani of University of Mangalore took women’s javelin throw silver with a throw of 46.89 metres. The gold in this event went to Annu Rani of CCS University, Meerut, with a distance of 48.40.

Other silver medal was won by Raneesh VV of Mangalore University, who tallied 6238 points for the men’s decathlon crown. Athletes from traditional power houses Punjab and Kerala dominated the championships for the second successive day. In the men’s 400-metre, Kerala University’s Vishnu V powered to victory, posting 47.77 seconds ahead of Sandeep of MDU, Rohtak, who bagged the silver in 49.01. Long distance runner Kumar of DDU Gorakhpur University, who timed 30 minutes 18.03 seconds, pocketed the men’s 10000-metre title.

Meanwhile, a four member National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) officials arrived here on Sunday evening. NADA assistant project officer PJ Vijaya Varma said they had taken samples from 10 athletes on Monday.
