Police constable killed in stone pelting incident at Katpady

Udupi, Jan 3, 2012 : A head constable died while fighting miscreants at a New Year party in Katpady on Jan 1 Sunday. 


contable1The deceased Yogish Padakannayya (53) of Mangalore was the head constable at Katpady police outpost.

The Adarsh Youth Club based in Katpady had organized a musical concert in front of Papillion Bar along the Katpady – Shirva road on the evening of Jan 1 Sunday. Although the police had instructed the group to stop the event at 11:00 p.m., the concert continued. When the police intervened, the local youth began abusing them and pelting stones on them. Padakannayya, who was seriously injured when a stone hit him on the head, was admitted to the government hospital, but could not be saved.

The police have arrested a number of young people, including the organizers Wilfred Oswald D’Mello, Raviprakash Acharya, Santhosh, Sudhakar Salian, Vijayaraj Moodubelle, and Edwyn Louis Fernandes.

Mohan Kottari, the sub inspector of Kaup Police Station, has registered a case. State honors were offered to the deceased at a ceremony held on Chandu Maidan by SP Dr. Ravi Kumar, DySP Jayanth Shetty, and ASP Venkateshappa on Jan 2 Monday.

Adarsh Youth Club organizes cultural programmes every year and a number of people gather at the spot, causing traffic blocks and altercations between vehicle owners and pedestrians. Following the tragic death of the head constable, the local people have urged the police not to permit any such events in future.
