Mangaluru: Lawyers detained while marching to protest Cabinet meeting over jail mobile jammer issue

Mangaluru, September 18, 2026: High drama unfolded at the Mangaluru District Court premises on Thursday as police detained lawyers who were preparing to march towards the venue of the Karnataka Cabinet meeting.

The protest was led by Mangaluru Bar Association president and advocate Jagadish Shenava over the continuing issue of mobile phone jammers installed around the Mangaluru District Prison.


Lawyers

The lawyers alleged that the problem had not been resolved despite repeated concerns. They announced plans to gherao the Cabinet meeting being held in Mangaluru to draw the government’s attention to the issue.

Shenava had announced that a team of around 300 advocates would march from the court premises towards the Cabinet meeting venue.

Police detained the lawyers as they attempted to proceed with the protest.

The District Prison is located close to the Mangaluru District Court. The protesting lawyers said they would go ahead with the march despite the deployment of security forces, stating that they would not back down even in the event of the deployment of the Rapid Action Force or use of force.
