Mangaluru: Complete urban development works within stipulated time, says Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah

Mangaluru, Sep 18, 2026: Urban Development Minister Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah directed officials to complete ongoing urban development projects in Mangaluru within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining quality standards.

He chaired a review meeting at the Mangaluru City Corporation’s Mangal Hall to assess the progress of various projects being implemented by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board (KUWSDB), and Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC).

The meeting reviewed the progress of urban development works and key civic issues, including drinking water supply, underground drainage, streetlights, markets, e-Khata services and waste management.

The minister instructed all departments to work in coordination and ensure that the projects undertaken are completed on time and to the required quality standards.

Priority to digitalisation of civic services

As part of the ongoing process to digitalise 13 city corporations across Karnataka, officials were directed to ensure that all civic services and essential information are made easily accessible to the public in digital form.

Expansion of drinking water and drainage networks

Officials were directed to upgrade water storage facilities keeping in mind the city’s requirements for the next 25 years.

Of the 96,300 household water connections planned in Mangaluru, 39,182 have been completed. The minister directed officials to expedite the remaining 57,118 connections.

At present, underground drainage facilities cover around 65% of the city, or 86.09 sq km. Officials were instructed to gradually extend the network to the remaining areas.

Speed up streetlight installation

Around 55.6% of the planned streetlights, or 36,643 lights, have been installed in the city. Officials were directed to expedite installation in the remaining areas.

Central Market project reviewed

The meeting reviewed the progress of the Central Market project, being developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model at an estimated cost of around ₹150 crore. The project, which includes 586 shops, is reportedly nearing completion.

The progress of market projects at Kankanady, Kadri, Urwa and Surathkal was also reviewed, with officials instructed to complete the pending works at the earliest.

Strict instructions on waste segregation

The minister directed officials to ensure 100% segregation of waste at source.

Mangaluru generates around 120 tonnes of wet waste, 125 tonnes of mixed waste, 15 tonnes of tender coconut/coconut waste and five tonnes of sanitary waste every day, along with around 250 tonnes of dry waste every week.

Officials were instructed to give greater priority to waste segregation and scientific waste management.

Expedite e-Khata distribution

Of the 2,22,256 e-Khatas in Mangaluru, 68,603 have been issued so far. Officials were directed to speed up the distribution of the remaining e-Khatas and ensure that eligible residents do not face delays in obtaining khata and plot-related services.

The minister also directed officials to ensure that public toilets are kept clean and maintained properly.

He further instructed officials to make effective use of the Smart City project’s Command Centre for monitoring the overall management of the city and public services.

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, MLA Dr Bharath Shetty Y, MLCs Ivan D’Souza, Mohan P.V. and Kishore Kumar Botyadi, MUDA Chairman Santhosh Kumar Shetty, former mayor Bhaskar Moily, Karnataka State Seed and Organic Certification Agency Chairperson Lavanya Ballal Jain, MCC Commissioner Rahul Ratnam Pandey, MUDA Commissioner Mohammed Nazir and senior officials from various departments were present at the meeting.
