Mangaluru, Aug 27, 2025: Noted actor and director Devadas Kapikad said that Mangaluru lacks a dedicated institution for theatre training, and plans are underway to establish one in the city.
He was speaking after receiving the Guest of Honour recognition at the Mangaluru Press Club on Tuesday.
“The theatre training centre will begin next year. We had planned to start it five years ago, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the initiative. Even today, Mangaluru does not have a proper theatre auditorium, and we are forced to depend on Town Hall for performances,” he said.
Kapikad recalled that in the past, there was little encouragement for theatre artistes, and playwrights were looked down upon. “When I began my career, there was no supportive environment, and I grew only through hard work. Now, the situation has changed—society respects and honours theatre.”
He pointed out that earlier, women kept away from theatre, and men had to play female roles. “That is no longer the case. Today, women themselves are coming forward and seeking opportunities in theatre,” he noted.
On music, Kapikad said that there are ample opportunities now. “I have composed music for three films. Students should show interest in learning music. Along with education, one should gain expertise in their field of passion,” he said.
He also praised the theatre fraternity of Dakshina Kannada district for their unity. “There is no rivalry or animosity. Theatre troupes are growing with mutual cooperation,” he said.
Recalling his personal struggles, Kapikad said he grew up in poverty, with his father and brother facing health problems. “During my school days, I was interested in drama, singing, and had a flair for comedy. Teachers encouraged me. My admission to Government College, Mangaluru, gave a new direction to my life, and my inner artiste found an opportunity to shine.”
Speaking about his theatre journey, he said, “Through my own troupe ‘Cha Parka,’ I staged pure comedy plays and received success. With the love and blessings of Tulu Nadu people, I grew in my career. My play ‘Ennane Kathe’ is the 60th production of my troupe.”
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Sushmitha S. Kotian, Head of Journalism Department, Srinivas University. Mangaluru Press Club President P.B. Harish Rai presided.
Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists’ Association President Srinivas Nayak Indaje, Patrika Bhavan Trust President Annappa Mangalore, Press Club General Secretary Ibrahim Adkasthala, Founding President Anand Shetty, Maharashtra-Kannadiga Journalists’ Association President Rons Bantwal, and programme coordinator Satish Ira were present.
Press Club Secretary Pushparaj B.N. proposed the vote of thanks, while journalist Santosh Montero compered the event.
