The “padayatra” began from Kanva Theertha, near the Karnataka-Kerala border, at 8.35 a.m. and concluded at Bhagambila, near Kumpala, in Mangalore taluk at about 8 p.m. with an hour’s break. Although at some places they travelled by vehicles, the “padayatra” was true to its spirit as they covered a long distance on foot. By afternoon, they had covered about 12 km on foot from Kanva Theertha to Somanatheswara temple at Someshwar. After an hour’s break at the temple, the “padayatra” resumed.

Rajashekarananda of Vajradehi Math, Gurupura; Mohanadasa of Manila; Ramananda of Kolya; Yogananda Saraswathi of Kondevuru, Manjeshwar; Balayogi Amrutananda of Thokkottu; Muktananda of Karinje near Moodbidri and Vikhyananda of Byalettu joined the “padayatra”. Mangalore MLA U.T. Khader joined the seers when they began their walk and later left the spot to welcome them at Talapady.

The team passed through Kunjathur, K.C. Road, Uchil, Someshwar, Kolya, Adka, Kumpala and Madoor.

The Pejawar seer addressed gatherings at many bhajana mandirs. He urged people to alcoholism, give up eating beef, not to kill, stop promoting untouchability and imbibe and practise high moral values.

He said upper “caste” people among Hindus should mingle with lower caste people. The swamiji told presspersons that he undertook “padayatra” as mere speeches alone would not suffice to unite Hindus. During “padayatra”, he sent the message to upper “caste” people on the need to mingle with lower caste people.

Asked why he was undertaking a “padayatra” at the age of 80, he said that someone would have to step out to keep Hindus united.

The seer distributed a booklet containing Sanskrit “slokas” with Kannada translation for daily rendering. Children and women took the blessings of the seer and offered him garlands of tulasi at many places.

The 76-year-old Vishwaguru Krupa Theertha of Udupi accompanied Visvesha Theertha. The “padayatra” will continue on Thursday and Friday in Ullal region.

Prof. M. B. Puranik, the convener of Pejawar Seer Samarasya Yatre Samithi, and Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, the president of DK District Kannada Sahitya Parishad, were also present.

The walkathon will enter Mangalore on Oct 8, Friday.
